Operational route

Northwest Passage

Set of routes through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago connecting Baffin Bay with the Beaufort Sea.

Latest segment assessment: 11/08/2026, 17:45:20 UTC · Not for navigation or voyage planning.

Segment pressure

Route Access Pressure is computed per segment from ice concentration and anomaly, official marine and ice warnings, navigation restrictions and data coverage. Segments without sufficient fresh data show Insufficient data.

Why these labels? Assessment explanations
  • Baffin Bay Approach: Observed conditions and official notices indicate operating pressure below the constraint threshold for this segment.
  • Lancaster Sound: Observed conditions and official notices indicate operating pressure below the constraint threshold for this segment.
  • Barrow Strait & Viscount Melville Sound: Observed conditions indicate severe operating pressure; expect major constraints relative to the seasonal norm. Classification driven by ice concentration (74%), which sets a floor independent of other inputs.
  • Peel Sound & Victoria Strait: Observed conditions and official notices indicate operating pressure below the constraint threshold for this segment.
  • Amundsen Gulf & Beaufort Leg: Observed conditions and official notices indicate operating pressure below the constraint threshold for this segment.
  • Chukchi & Bering Approach: Observed conditions and official notices indicate operating pressure below the constraint threshold for this segment.

Pressure history

Daily Route Access Pressure per segment. Historical days are reassessed from ice concentration and anomaly only — official warnings and restrictions are not available retrospectively, so past coverage is lower than the live assessment.

About this route

The Northwest Passage (NWP) comprises several route variants through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Canada regards these waters as internal waters; the United States considers them an international strait. Traffic is dominated by community resupply, government vessels, and a small number of commercial and cruise transits in the open-water season.

Route Access Pressure is an analytical indicator of operational pressure, not a safety-of-navigation product. Official ice services and route administrations remain the authoritative sources. Methodology
